Emotional Regulation Program

This intervention is based on Dr Julie Brown’s Dialectical Behavioural Therapy informed program for clients with an intellectual impairment. The intervention can be run 1:1 with the client and can also include the support workers and family members to teach and implement different strategies to identify, communicate, and address difficulties with Emotional Regulation. At the current time, this intervention is developed for children, adolescents and adults who are verbal and can engage in written material. The intervention includes:

  • An initial assessment to identify what the client’s specific interests and goals are for the program and unique learning styles, neurodiversity and capacities.

  • Individualised resources, games and handouts are developed based on the client’s learning needs and interests to help prompt remembering and using the different skills

  • Mindfulness strategies to identify warning signs that the client is moving into dysregulation

  • Safety Plans for the client and support people to use when in high distress and in different environments

  • Support to communicate distress to different trusted people

  • Skills to use to enable independent problem solving

  • Relationship and interpersonal strategies to increase social connections and develop friendships.

Depending on available Occupational Therapy funding, different skills can be added or removed to prioritise addressing key areas.
